By Lene Caracas-Apuntar | | Feb 25, 2019

Josefina Ortiz who was referred to as “mamafina” was born on May 5th, 1934 in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Mamafina was 1 of 24 siblings.

She unfortunately, did not have the easiest childhood and was moved from her parents’ home at a young age. She then was sent to New York and was taken in and raised by a pastor and his wife who she referred to as “mama,” and “papa.” Mamafina loved this family because they treated her like their own and allowed her the opportunity to live a happy life and attend college where she studied Public Administration. Mamafina worked as a Plant Manager for a Caps and Gown business and excelled in her career.

She was happily married throughout this time to her first husband, named Juan Mattos Pratts. Mamafina and Juan enjoyed being married for over 40 years. Through this marriage, she met and raised her husband’s granddaughter Judy Louisa Pratts who she loved very much. Mamafina treated Judy like her own child and eventually helped her to raise Ocean Stephanie Maceira (AKA Stephanie) and Ocean Nicole Maceira (AKA Nicole). Nicole was born on June 24th, 1995 and mamafina took her in at 3 months old. Stephanie was born on July 15th, 1996 and Josefina took her in at birth. On September 2nd, 2005, Judy passed away and Nicole and Stephanie remained under Josefina’s permanent care. She considered them her own children even though she did not ever have biological children. Judy’s husband and the father of the children, Raul Maceira, was always grateful for Josefina and knew that the children being in her care was best because of how much she loved them and provided for them. Nicole and Stephanie consider Josefina to be their mother and were always by her side up until witnessing her take her last breath.

Mamafina became a widow for the first time on August 16th, 2011 when Juan Matos Pratts passed away. Around this time, she began her battle with cancer. These times were not easy for Josefina, however was always a fighter. Josefina re-married to Armando Quinones in 2013, who was a widower, and became a stepmother to three children: Nilsa Morales, Maria Morales, and Lucy Rivera. Mamafina’s genuine happiness and love with Armando kept her fighting through her illness. She always remained with a smile on her face and focused on being a great wife. Mamafina lost Armando on October 24, 2018 and became a widow for the second time.

Mamafina passed away on February 21, 2019. She had a great soul and a loving spirit and made an impact on many lives. Mamafina spent her last days with a few of her sisters including Mercedes Ruiz, Carmen Ayala, and Amelia Rolon. She was also surrounded by her daughters/son-in-law’s: Nicole, Stephanie, Nilsa Morales, Raul Maceira, Michael Garcia, and Joshua Rosier.

Mamafina will be remembered for her ability to take care of others, and her strength. Mamafina had a love for angels, flowers, and the color lilac. Her favorite song was “Que Sera, Sera” by Doris Day which outlines that “whatever will be, will be” in this life and we must make the most of every second.
